My father in law says he has a pure bred shar pei. I just want to know if it is really a shar pei. When the dog was younger it truly did have a decent amount of wrinkles in his skin. The dog is a very dark brown, almost looks black. He has spots on his tongue (father in law says thats typical of a shar pei). However, there are noooo wrinkles in his skin. His skin is soo tight it's almost like he doesn't have any skin. Also, the dog is very "touchy", you can't move too fast around him or he thinks you are going to do something. He growls alot at other dogs (they all no not to mess with him). He often growls at kids if they get too close. He makes me very nervous, you just get the feeling you never know what the dog might do. I just want to know if it really is a shar pei. I always see them as being really cute looking dogs, retaining some of the wrinkles from their puppy days. Also, are they aggressive dogs?? Please supply me with some information on shar peis that I guess I am lacking. Thanks!!
Yep, it is probably a shar-pei. They are not warm and fuzzy, sweet type dogs. It is not unusual as well to see them lose their wrinkles as they age. The more wrinkles, the more money for the pup.
All in all, the dog is better off. The wrinkles, while cute are a breeding ground for all types of bacteria and what not. Most people do not realize you have to clean those folds and even powder them.
I will stick to my dogs that have skin that fits... thanks
This dog gets into alot of fights with other dogs as well as animals, like raccoons, etc. His skin seems to be so sensitive, it gets cut at the slightest scratch. Seems like they are always getting stitches. Thanks for the fast reply!!
Shar pei's were bred to be watch dogs in China, so yes they can be very agressive. My friend had one that also lostits wrinkles and was also quite small for the breed but he had papers. go figure
