I've just been reading "Dogs never lie about love" by Jeffrey Masson and here is an interesting bit from the book:-
"Many Jews who lived through the Holocaust are still frightened of GSD's. They remind them of the camps, where these dogs were often urged to attack and kill Jews. Pictures from Auschwitz reveal groups of Jews surrounded by menacing GSD's. It occurred to me that no one, not even a German, has ever written about those dogs. On film, we see the Nazi Guards with the dogs, and we blame and hate the guards but not the dogs. Not even the victims blamed the dogs. Why not? Surely it is because everyone recognises that the dogs were trained to behave in the way they did. They did not harbour a natural dislike of Jews. "
It goes on to say:-
"I wonder if the dogs were ever reluctant to do what they were told to do, if they ever hesitated when given their orders. Did they ever feel compassion for their victims or wonder why these people were being murdered? Did some dogs just refuse to perform? I am sure there must have been a failure rate, dogs that were simply not suitable for this kind of work, or performed badly, or who could not learn to do what was expected of them"
This got me wondering if the author is correct in saying that a book has never been written about these dogs . Does anyone know different?
I would welcome your views
Well, that would be like asking if a police service canine felt bad about making an accidential bite. The author there is ascribing human emotions/reasoning behavior to a dog.
And as far as I know, no book has ever been written about dogs as guards in *any* situation, much less during WWII in Germany.
