Frontline Topspot or if you have an existing in-house flea problem Frontline plus.
They not only kill fleas, but also protect against ticks. You do not have to buy from your vet and if you look around at different suppliers you can get a decent deal. I purchased 12 doses of frontline from an online retailer for around $85 with free shipping. At the vet it would have been $120 or more.

I agree.
I have never had a flea problem here even with 3 large breed dogs and a big house to roam. I think the combination of prevention, hardwood floors throughout my home and paranoia helps. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
I think Old Earth Dog's idea is a good one and wish I had thought of it myself.
I also from time-to-time, set a flea trap especially if I see a flea.
This is a simple trap:
Put your dogs away at night and set the trap.
Place a desk lamp on the floor with a small shallow plastic tray underneath it. Put enough water in the tray to cover the surface of until it is about 1/8 - 1/4 of an inch deep. and add a few drop of dishwashing liquid.
The light attracts the fleas and the soap water traps them. It is a good indicator of your flea problem or lack of one.

In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi-human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog. - Edward Hoagland
Just as a reminder, I'm sure you all know anyway, but the flea is also the host for the tape worm. If you have a flea infestation, it would be wise to watch for the symptoms of tape. I wish I would have been the one that invented Top Spot. With nearly 50 working dogs, that all live at the Troopers home, it has been a real benefit and in the long run, much less expensives than dips, yard treatments etc.

I don't put any chemicals on my dog, a piece of raw garlic every day works just as well or maybe better against pests. You can also rub a piece in his ears for ear mites. Yeah he smells, but that's part of the reason it works so well. Ticks & fleas have a keen sense of smell. If they do bite, they jump off immediately. He runs through weeds all the time & I've never picked off a tick yet or seen him itch.
Yes, because you don't just put it on the hair, you get it in deep to the skin. The dog's hair will cover it and act like a raincoat. I would not bathe the dog for several days after applying.
