The AKC Board has not yet voted on approving the Working Dog Sport venue. However, at the AKC Club Delegates meeting, it was voted against.
And you're going to just love the reason (and no...it's not the liability issue, which would be a reasonable one...)
From the published minutes of the Delegates meeting:
The Chair recognized Robert Kelly, Delegate for the Land O’Lakes Kennel Club......
"What I want to talk about is the working dog program. First, the Gazette will not show it, but this morning, ten people spoke against it, basically, and were questioning it and were against it, slightly against it and heavily against it. The Gazette will also not show that when Connie asked for a show of hands, there was nothing but a scattering of hands in favor of it. I think the Board should take very seriously the attitude of the Delegates, which is negative to the way it has proceeded and negative to doing it.
And I must tell you myself, we spent our lives trying to take our dogs down the straight and narrow path to avoid bringing out the aggressive tendencies of the dog.
I think that the Board should take very seriously what has happened in the forum and this meeting before it approves that, and certainly they should allow 60 days for input. People were asking me at dinner about 60 days for input from the clubs and the Delegates before they do vote.
Thank you."
Doesn't surprise me a bit, coming from the A(nother) K(roc) of C (rap).
My .02, I hope they stay as far away from sport as possible. The AKC has its place and missions, but being within 50 miles of a working field is not one of them. I can just imagine, groomers tables, wash basins and blow dryers set up at trials. In addition to a high in trial trophy, the dogs would also get a complimentary pedicure and nail painting.
