At what age is your dog to old to get him started in Schutzhund? I want to get my dog started with this, he is approximately 1 year and 8 months old. I understand the AKC does not recogize this sport...correct? My focus on his training will be that of which is required of this sport. Got some stuff off the interent, can anyone recommend any good books so I can learn more about it? Right now though I also have him in agility (just started). IS this something I should stop or continue? I feel there are some benefits to what he is learning that will be transferable to Schutzhund, but yet do not want to start anything or continue with anything that will come in the way of Schutzhund. Are there any tests that I can do to see if he is a good dog for Schutzhund?

Thanks I will do that, the closest one is roughly about 2hrs away. I will see what they have to say and go from there. I am not looking at it for titles, just for the discipline aspects. I would really like to get him started in obedience trials, but the AKC is the only one that offers that and my local club doesn't offer obedience lessons, they are only show and agility. No offense but I also wasn't to happy with how uncontrolled the dogs were that I saw and how "upiddy" the owners were. They thought it was gastly when I walked in with my prong collar and when I mentioned Schutzhund, well I was a monster then at that point . But yet for the monster they were very impressed with how well trained my dog was. If I can teach him the fundamentals of Schutzhund that will be good enough for me. Think its possible?

I agree with you Dee on how "prissy" the AKC can be, I've had that experience as well, lol. But I'll tell you, it's not too late to get started. My pup's sire was 5 or 6 yrs old before he had gotten started in the training. He just recently retired and was ready for his Sch2. Definately check out some clubs and have someone there with experience evaluate him for you. Good luck.
