I am located in Oregon and I am looking for someone who would know how to or know someone that could test my dog (GSD) for work as a police or search and rescue dog. I have asked my veteranarian, and other vets around my area, but they do not know. I do know there is a place in Tacoma, WA that does this type of testing but so far unable to reach them. He is a wonderful dog, but I just do not know how to care for a GSD properly. He is very safe with us and plays all day long with his puppy friend.
Alan Carlson is a retired police K9 guy, he lurks on this board from time to time. He lives in Springfield.
He has a website as well, I think. Do a search for Springfield K9.
There is also the Oregon Police Canine Association's website. http://www.OPCA.com
They have contact information, and could point you in the right direction if you wanted to donate your dog I think.
Search One, the civi SAR group in Portland also has a K9 part of their team, although I know exactly zip about it. They can be found on the web as well.
Anyway, mail me. . .
Just out of curiosity, what type of bloodlines does the dog come from?
Did you get the dog directly from the Von Falconer Kennels or another place? If you don't mind disclosing this....how much did you pay for the dog. It might be considered a tax right off.....
This is my first post here! Hope I'm doing it right.
If you are in the Eugene area of Oregon, Ken Schilling works with GSD's (and other breeds too, but that is his specialty). He does police dog training and also works with people on basic obedience for pets, protection training etc. He might be able to help you to evaluate the dog and or to learn how to handle it yourself if you want to do that.
Actually we got the dog for free, because my brother is a police officer the people who had him just gave him to us. He was originally adopted by a man who was going to train him for schutzhound (sp?) anyways he fell on hard times and asked the breeder if they would take the dog back and find him a new home. We were told this dog was 6 months old, not sure if he really was, I do feel the dog was older because he has not grown much. He still acts like a puppy though so he is probably close to being a year old. From what the breeder told me this dog was evaluated by Kurt and was said to be good for service work. I got this dog from a Siberian Husky breeder who had him, I am unsure of the correct story. The Sibe breeder sure seemed to know what they were doing with him though, he listened very well. Anyways getting him to a person or organization that could use his intelligence and energy would be wonderful for him.
