It has been awhile since I raised a litter of puppies....what is the best and cleanest bedding to use for babies over a week old. Have been using sheets and towels but all of this washing is getting old....don't like to use newspaper as I feel it is too slick until they can walk. Are they too young for cedar shavings?
Happy New Year to all,
Debbie

hi debbie! i don't ever like to use cedar shavings for dogs. i worry about them ingesting them and getting sick. nice, clean pine shavings are much safer, quite absorbent, smell pretty good and not too bad to clean up if you can keep them contained. if you are using a whelping box or a kiddie pool, that should keep the shavings in fairly well. if the pups are only a week old and don't have eyes open yet, you probably won't want to lay them right onto the chips, but use some shredded newspapers on top of the chips to keep the dust and fine particles out of their tiny noses and mouths. as they get to moving around on their legs instead of crawling and get their eyes open, you can dispense with the newspapers and just use the pine shavings.
what a joyous thing for the holidays. puppies are always wonderful, but new life at christmas time.....how neat.
if there are no dogs in heaven, then when i die i want to go where they went. ---will rogers |

Debbie - either use the pine shavings (we no longer use Cedar Sahvings on small pups) or tear up strips of news paper - not those slick pages of advertising - just the normal newspaper. Sine your husband is responsible for this this accidentl breeding you need to have him be the RIPPER. In fact - keep a pile of news papers next to his chair in the living room and have him fill a 50 gallon garbage bag every night.
If you can keep your bedding clearn your chances of a healthy litter go up 10 fold.

Thanks for the suggestions.....I love it when I'm not the one to mess up....that's a great idea Ed...plan on raising this litter just like any other, babies are babies. Winnie thinks they are the best ever. I must admit they are cute little fellas....look just like Mals!
Hurry and get that new tape "Raising a Working Litter" out....I need it! I believe in having a positive attitude and making the best of every situation....you just never know....

Yeah Karmen, Winnie is an excellent mother! She is very attentive...keeps those babies licked clean, if one is crying she checks it out to see what the problem is, keeps the nest area clean, has plenty of milk and is calm and relaxed. These qualities are worth a lot.
