Are there any preventive measures, advices during the Cicadas season???
My shepherd lives in the outside kennel. Has anyone dealt with this in the past, and what would you advise. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
Thank you!
Well, on the radio today they were saying , that if dog eats them, then he will have diarhhea, vomiting, etc.....
I have never seen them beofre in my life, so don't really know what to expect.
Should I still keep him outside, or not?
We live in a wooded area of the midwest and there are many cicadas. I've never heard of them causing a problem for the dogs. You hear them by the millions, but it's relatively rare (and really cool) to have the chance to see one come out of it's larval shell.
The birds seem to get most of the dead and dying ones. The dogs might get ahold of one a year. They make enough noise with those big wings to make all but my dedicated bee killer let them go.
There is a great big wasp that hunts the cicadas. I think it lays eggs in them. A really huge wasp. But I've seen very few of them recently.
I'll ask my vet, but I just never heard of cicadas being a problem.
I remember a few years ago (5-7 maybe?) the cicadas got really bad, they were everywhere! But I don't think any of my dogs ate any, or if they did, they didn't get sick.
Hmmm, I'm not sure how worried I'd be about this, as I've watched my GSD hop around the yard and eat about twenty crickets every day of the summer for two years now - no harmful side effects so far.
And it really seems to have helped his jumps, too! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
I live in an area with a lot of cicadas...and some of my dogs make quite a meal of them...ick,
but only one of my three that does eat them vomits, and only after the wings are ingested. ??? Anyhow, you might want to be careful of the "cicada killers"--those giant wasps that kill cicadas. JMO
My vet said should be no problem with eating them except if some fool had been spraying them with insectacide. I found several articles on eating them, I mean people eating them, and the only "bad" thing seemed to be they are high-ish in cholestrol (sp., pardon me).
