My four month old GSD whines sometimes when she's in her crate. Mostly when she is on her own in the room and we are downstairs working in the basement.
The worst problem is at 4 or 5 am in the morning. She starts whining and yelping. She doesn't need a pee because sometimes I will bring our 11 year old dog into the room and close the door and the whining will stop for a couple of hours. So she can hold it for longer.
It's driving me nuts. I have a spray bottle of water near the crate and when I am close enough I will spray her and shout at the same time. This usually does the trick for 30 minutes or so.
You might try a raw beef soup bone. The marrow is good for them and there jaw gets a work out. There usually frozen in packages when you buy them, and I will thaw out the package and put the bone I'm going to give my dog into a bowl of hot water until the bone is nice and warm (you don't want to give it to them cold). He will chew on the bone for a couple hours, then sleep, then chew some more......Hope this helps.
Sometimes she will whine when she is in the crate just for a few minutes, if she is left alone in the room. She usually stops this after a short while though.
She is usually put in her crate at about 11.00 pm at night and can start whining anywhere from 4.00 - 6.00 am. Getting up and putting the older dog in the same room usually keeps her quiet for another two hours. But our older dog is only going to around for short while.
