We are currently interviewing candidates to fill two vacant K9 handler positions. There are many desireable qualifications one must have to be considered. There are also undesireable atributes as well. One such thing that will prevent a candidate from consideration is whether or not said person smokes. These people will not be considered for a position because of their vice. I have been told for years that the reason for this is the detrimental effect smoke has on the dogs' olfactory senses. I have also been told that some unproven "Research" suggests that it will affect the dogs' night vision as well. Nowhere is there concern for the handler's well-being or their ability to physically work the dog as a smoker. I enjoy a good cigar at work now and then but dont smoke near the dog so its not a problem. I am unable to confirm what has been spouted as gospel all these years. Thoughts and suggestions welcome
Howard, I am also in the process of replacing a handler. In the past we have not taken into consideration whether a prospective handler is a smoker or not. There is supposed to be a city wide policy prohibiting smokers from smoking in city vehicles Ha Ha. I'm not aware of any studies that reflect the ill affects of second hand smoke to psd's but would be interested in seeing one.
The handler that I'm replacing is the only smoker that we have and I have seen him make a concerted effort to smoke outside patrol car and away from the dog.
Like you I enjoy a good cigar now and then. There really aren't many places to go to smoke cigars anymore
We have the same policy, but when the chiefs on down break it i think it is pretty much BS. I havent found any studies on effect of smoke on K9s either. I can only assume it effects them the same way it does humans. I can understand if they are concerned about the handlers' ability to run long tracks because of smoking but they arent making that an issue.
