Ok I have a question... My Kane didnt come with a tattoo, or any kind of microchip. Now I have heard there are too many variations of different chips. So is it still a good idea to have him chipped? If so how do I know which one or does it matter? If someting were to happen and he lost his collar with his identification tags I wat to know there will be a way for him to be identified.
My vet offers this service for $45 and I have heard of shelters offering it for only $10. Why would there be such a big difference in price? Is it the ttype of chip maybe?
I both tattoo *and* microchip all my dogs - I'd hate for my dog Fetz to get loose and end up as a therapy dog at some nursing home because they couldn't read his tattoo.
Different chips require a different scanner to read, unfortunately, and I think there are currently three manufacturers of chip nationally ( soon to drop to two ) . This is a big problem, as many shelters can't afford the price of mutiple makes of scanners. Humane socities and shelters offer low cost chipping, but usually roll the expense of the chip into the adoption fee.
And a lot of shelter automatically microchip strays, as the previous owners have proven that they lack the ability to confine their dogs.
If I was you. I would wait till one of the shelters was having a microchip day and get it done then. They are very affective. I had a dog returned because of it. Most of the scanners will read the other ones out there also. Good luck
Well, I use the scanners several times a day at the Humane Society. None of them read the other manufacterers chip ( at all ) , as per the manufacterers recommendations.
Unless they came up with a new, super duper, read'em all scanner - which would be nice.
Will, they do have a universal scanner for HomeAgain and Avid (I know 'cause I have one, given to me by the rescue group I work with ).
I'll find out who makes it and PM you. What's going to suck is if Banfield comes out with their own chip, which will be unreadable by any scanner but their own (at the cost of several hundred dollars to buy, no discounts for shelters or rescues )

And from what I've heard about Fetz, I'd say there's slim to no chance of that happening .
 Like the'll get close enough to Fetz to read a tattoo OR a chip.
IMO, HomeAgain is the better of the two companies. We've used both, but I like the fact that HomeAgain has a smaller bore needle, better customer service, and up to 50 contact numbers allowed.
