I recently purchased a GSD from Germany with an excellent pedigree and temperament. The dog is always with me, I take him to work with me (liquor store) and back home at night. He is a 22 month old GSD, son of VA1 larus von batu. I'm very pleased with his attitude and intelligence.
I've had him for about three weeks now, and he has developed a desire to chase cars whenever I walk him by very busy intersections. he pulls very hard on the leash and rises on his hind legs. I know he was raised on a farm, so cars are something new to him. What can I do to correct this behavior?
I tried sitting him next to me at intersections to get him used to the traffic but no luck yet.
Does anyone know of a good trainer in NY area as I would like to start him in protection work after this problem is solved.
Thanks
I know I'd be popping a correction on my dogs prong collar and then moving on down the sidewalk.
You thinking of Schutzund Training? Or Protection Training? I know I would prefer the variety of the tracking, obedience and protection of Schutzund. But, more importantly, it's very different training and different people can help you on this site if you have a good idea of your goals.
Have you gone to any obedience classes at all? If I wasn't able to find a protection or Schutzund training place I could go to, I'd at least start off there. Your wonderful dog was (as you have found) bred to be a handful, and many times it helps to have professional help so both dog and handler learn.

I thought of putting a prong collar on him and using a solid correction, but I don't have any experience with those types of collars and don't want to make the problem worse or have another problem develop.
I was thinking more along the lines of protection training for inside the store while at work.
I'm doing obedienc training on my own right now till I find a good trainer to take over.
Since my girls always act fairly perfect when I training them alone at home..............
And I seem to get less than perfect behavior from the same dogs when out in public with all the fun DISTRACTIONS involved............
I personally always go to group obedience classes with my dogs. All the built in distractions of new dogs and people are more like the setup of a 'real world'. So I get guidance and training for me while the dog is in the environment that we will have the most trouble in.
Others prefer private training sessions. And there are training videos for sale on this site.
But I do love the prong collar! Though I found it also worked best in conjunction with a good trainer for the concerns you mentioned.
