hi everyone,
i'm a little new here, so take it easy.
i need to correct some dominance problems i'm having with my 1yr old greyhound. she has growled, shown her teeth, and bit 2 times (minor bites). i've made huge mistakes that were unknown before finding the leerburg web site. i am in the process of making all necessary corretions in the way we handle saffy (our grey). i've read the domince article, purchased the basic obedience tape and am following all recomendations on rules i've seen on this site. my question is this, if i am going to use a collar for teaching and training my grey for basic obedience, which collar would work better....or is there another collar that i should be using? she is stubborn, as most grey's are and has a long neck, soft skin and a thin coat of hair. this is why i am leaning against a prong collar. advice please on which one to select. her neck just below the ears, where the collar should go measures at 14.5", should i then order a 15" collar, or a 16" collar?
thanks,
max
well on the basic obedience video a prong or prick collar is used...Ed always says "not breed specific" in the training--and even recommends prong collars for small breeds...why should your breed be exempt?
Start with the prong collar. The hide of a greyhound is no different than many other dogs. Fact is if you learn to give correctins you will find out why we call it power steering on dogs.
You are not going to hurt this dog unless you abuse the training tool.
The dominant dog collars are also effective training collars. Read the web page I wrote on how to fit and use them. These collars are best used on handler aggressive dogs.
Be careful about putting your breed of dog on a pedastil and make excuses for not training them like a normal dog.
