Just out of curiousity, how many commands do you think the average dog can be taught (correctly) and consistently obey?

I'm gonna go with 3 here. They would be.... sit.......... no........ and shut up! J/K. I'd say 8. But that is only for the AVERAGE dog.

Interesting question to try and answer. There are quite a lot of commands we actively try to teach our dogs, and then there are all the unconscious signals we give our dogs every day. ie: I had been only giving Glucosamine/MSM tablets to my dog for a few days, at dinnertime, when one evening I realized that when I said "time for your pill" she would park herself in front of me, lower jaw slack, ready for me to pop it down her throat! I had not taught her this- she just picked it up on her own from the routine. Makes you wonder just how closely our dogs are watching US...

That a real tough question, besides the verbal commands, how many body language commands can your dog cue off of?

Not all of them. And I think I've run across quite a few. I won't even mention the people that own them. I could write several novels.

Ah ha Brennan - when you say "Not all of them" and in the same breathe insinuate that their owners are, ahem, not too bright...you have to be smarter than a dog to train a dog.
That would rule out a fair number of owners, lol.
My dog can distinguish between "Lie down" and "Go lie down"
(right now right here -or- put some distance between us)
and understand linking of words he comprehends ie: "no"
and "bite" equals "don't be chewing on that" or "no" and "dog" equals "don't approach that dog". He's only limited by my limitations. He's just your average BYB GSD
but still he knows almost 30 words/phrases at under 2 yrs.
If he were a true GSD with a real trainer, who knows how far
the learning capacity could go?

mines a show line(basic equivalent to a byb gsd) and know a ton of commands in english and german.
all totaled probly 20 - 30 and she just hit a yr. oh that is 20 to 30 verbal and non verbal commands.
the amazing thing with her is that if i cock my shoulder or do the slightest twich of the finger she picks up on it.
they are way smarter than we will ever give them credit for
