I have had my 9 week old GSD pup for 2 days and not a mistake in the house! Now it is raining and looks like it could be most of the day and he hasn't wanted to go potty in the rain. he isn't noticably bothered by the thunder or noise, just the rain falling... i have had him under the porch so he could go on the concrete or under the eaves, but he just won't go. Also i have walked about in the rain to try to get him to go, no luck.
what is the best way to get him used to the rain or get him to go potty in the rain?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Larry
Long walks, unfortunatley, is the only thing I've found to work. A walk is percieved completely differently by my Mika than just going out with me to the back yard. The walk he loves, raining or not. Plus the exercise will help get him to go.
But so you know, I don't see any indication that Mika will otherwise change his attitude toward the rain. At 9 months he still hasn't become desensitized enough that he'll just go out and pee. He'll ask to go outside, see that it's raining, and just stand there. And if I close the door, he'll immediately ask to go out again. He'll do that about five times before he catches on that the weather just doesn't randomly change. Eventually, if I were to make him hold it long enough, he'd go, but then I'm lucky that he's been well housebroken from the start. Get the leash and the collar out, however, and he's ready to go.
FYI, here's what I've learned not to do (typical guy stupidity). 1) Stubbornly walking around in the yard until he pees just makes both of us wet and irritated; and 2) Leaving him in outside in his kennel while it's raining in hopes that he'll get used to it (yes, there's shelter from the rain) makes him hate his kennel, hate the rain worse, and leaves me with a terrible guilt trip.
So, it's raining here today, and not too long from now I'll be sloshing up the street with an obliviously happy, and wet, GSD in tow.
Thanks Jeff. Actually, I have gotten him to go... finnally.
We had already tried the stupid thing of marching around trying to get him to go... time was the only key. I am just cutting back on food a little and picking when I feed based on radar returns so that I can try to get a break in the rain in 15-30 mins. So far so good. Trying the old "pick your battles" thing. I figure if I can get him used to going in a light drizzle and work my way up, maybe that will help. I guess well see.
