First of all, I love this video. I've watched it 4-5 times, and I can still get new information out of it.
At first it seems simple. But it works.
I just had a few questions that I wanted to ask for people who knew:
1. What is a good follow on video to one? We don't plan on doing protection work. But may want to do other work (agility, pulling, etc.)
2. If I have a dog that just doesn't have enough drive (not focusing on the prey item intently during the sit), what else can I do? Any suggestions?
3. If the sit! just isn't coming fast enough, is correction + command the only option. Any other way I can coax my dog to hit the ground faster. I mean, its hardly "slow", but it just seems like he should be a little more motivated. He stares intently at the ball, and then maneuvers his butt to the ground.
If you don't plan on doing an protection or bite work, then I would recomend the Basic Obedience video. For any type of work or just having a well behaved and loving pet you want to have a dog that you are completely in control of, it just makes life easier.
In regards to drive, the reality is that a large part of it is genetic. If you work following the guidelines of the Drive video it can bring out every bit of potential in your dog, but you can really only go as far as the dog's genetics will let you. You could go in another direction and see if you dog has more drive when the reward is food but once again you are only going to go as far as the dog.
For a faster sit you need to examine how when you are rewarding the dog. Set a time limit that the dog must sit by or there is no reward. You will not get a fast sit if you reward the dog whenever it feels like sitting. If you wait for the dog to sit in it's own timeframe and then reward the sit, you are losing control of the situation. You will be amazed how quickly the dog will pick up on this if you withhold the reward until the dog sits in the time frame that you set for it.
