a qwes for the board folks :
how important in your opinion folks raising a working 9 month old puppy in a crate or a cage as i hear many of us here claiming it is so important for a working dog not to be free in my back yard .
what are the benefits ? , why will it make her a better working dog vs. same dog being free out of cage 24 hours a day.
thx for your kind help
You're missing the point, the crate has nothing to do with SchH training.
You can raise your dog any way you like, but there will always be situations where it is better for the dog to be in a kennel or crate. When you are not around to watch the dog for instance. Or when you have company over and you don't want the dog to interact with the visitors.
It's better for the dog to be in a kennel when you can't control the situation or you can't be there to supervise the dog.
As far as training, it can be a good thing to crate your dog for a few hours prior to training so that when they come out of the crate they are a bit frustrated and very ready to do something active with their minds and bodies.
My dog has a kennel outside, although I leave him loose in the yard at night and often during the day. The full day AND night before training, he spends it all in the run. It makes him crazy to work when I take him out on training days. I think it's a combination of the frustration of being kenneled, plus I think he's also learned the routine.
Speaking of Routine: I have been advised to kennel (we only have the indoor type) my boy for a short period after EVERY round of training, even if the training is only 10-15mins long. The theory is that the down time helps them to 'digest' the work they were just doing. I had been doing this already when training with a sch club since the dog spends more time in the kennel than on the field anyway. But it never occured to me before to do the same at home. It took no time at all for him to get used to this new routine. I don't know for sure if it is the crating that is improving the obedience or if it's because we are just able to practice frequently enough, but it finally looks half decent. Either way it's not hurting.
