I keep hearing about using a ball or some other toy as reward for obedience. From what I understand, the dog performs better when on prey drive. But I'm not sure why a toy would be a better choice than treats.
My pup pretty much likes toys, likes to bite, but I see that her interest in them is very high only when she's at home. Outside, she is very easily distracted, and unless I wait a while for her to get bored she will show no interest in the toy. I have been doing motivational obedience with her using treats, with GREAT success. She loves food, and is really fast to carry out commands, by word alone...knows the basics, including heel. Although it's all not really a great accomplishment since she's a Border Collie...
My question is, this isn't really a bad thing right, using food instead of a toy? I just can't understand why a toy is more often used.
I think you have figured out what your dog likes best and you should keep using it. For others, the toy is a great reward for their dog. If the dog responds well to a ball on a string, and goes crazy over it, then that person should keep using it. The toys can be a little easier to handle and work with and cheaper over the long run. I think it depends on the dog, what they want and will work for the best. If your dog likes the treats, keep using it. This is my opinion. Others on the board might feel different or have additional inputs.
I agree with Curtis. I can't spark my dog with toys the way I can with food. When my dog is hungry, no toy in the world can grab her attention. Food, on the other hand, works extremely well for me right before I feed her. I think every dog is different with different degrees of prey and food drive. Sounds like your dog is more food drive based and that maybe the best way to train her. Good luck.
