Hi, I am new here and looking for some info on the current prices of 'pet' quality working line puppies. I was not planning on looking for a new puppy, but my Roland had to be put down at 6yrs old. I am very sad and finding the house too quiet (even with twin 3yr olds!).
The breeder that I got Roland from is using a full brother as a stud and they have 2 puppies left from that breeding. I paid around 700 for Roland 6 yrs ago and these pups list at 1500. I do want working lines and loved Rolands temperment and attitude. I love the hardness and assertiveness and my goal with a dog is to do SAR. I would like to do hobby schutzhund too, but havent found a club close enough.
I think I over paid for Roland, would rather not again, so I thought I would ask the more knowledgeable about price ranges.
The price depends on the Sire and Dam. If they are good then $1500 might be fair. If they are just back yard breeders then I would go somewhere else. Anyone can tell you they are breeding working lines. Check the pedigree of the parents to make sure. I have bought Mal pups for $900 and higher before and to me that was a good price based off of the bloodlines. It goes back to what you want to pay. If $1500 is to much talk to the breeder and see what they an do for you. As the old saying goes you get what you pay for. You will never beable to replace your boy, but with proper breeding you can get a new one you are happy with.
Sorry to hear about your loss. My 6 year old Mal was stolen in May so I can relate.
When people get scared they call the police..When the police get scared they call K-9!
my research is a bit differant than yours i am looking for a hard core working pup and have found a few with decent bloodlines for around a 1000 but most have been for 1500 or more.
look around research the pedigrees when i get ready for a pup(just adopted another rescue so i doubt i will ready for a pup any time soon) that is about what i expect to pay for him.
also talk to the breeder see what can be done you never know until you ask
It really depends on if you want pet quality or breeding quality. Alot of working line breeders price them differently. Pet quality are alot more reasonable in price for the average pet home.
I am looking for pet quality from working lines. Roland was czec/german and I liked his type--looks and attitude very much. But since he was my first working line dog, I dont know much about them. He had too much drive for me at this point in my life, but in general I like a handful of a dog.
It is clear to me at this point that 1500 is way too much for me to pay for a puppy even if it is Rolands 'nephew'
Thanks all,
My GSD is out of Czech/West Ger. working lines. She cost $700...she is an excellent dog. Her drive is medium, which is great for me. I wish you luck in finding a dog at a good price! Keep looking and it will happen when it is right
One thing to think about - didn't Roland have to be euthanized due to serious health problems - DM and something else? - so if that is the case, wouldn't you want to steer clear from Roland's full brother's offspring - these problems can definately be genetic. Just something to think about.
Have you thought about getting your new dog thru a rescue? You obviously need to be careful in selecting the right dog. I got my dog thru a rescue and he is turning into a great dog. Check your emotions at the door though I looked at about 15 dogs before I decided on Alex. But, I would have had to pay a lot more than $1500 to guarantee the drive intelligence and temperament that I got with Alex.
If your goal is SAR, why on earth are you looking for anything less than the best quality working lines dog you can find?
You still need the drives and the confidence, and a solid structure. If any dog needs intense drives, it is a dog you are asking to work a full operational shift in a search on a warm muggy day.
$1000- $1500 pales in comparison to what you would spend training this dog.
If you are on a team, there are often times quite good young dogs available for this purpose in rescue situations and you can get the lead on a real nice one - I have seen several in the past year -- the secret to success in selecting the dog would be to have someone who really knows SAR dogs come and evaluate them for/with you.
Sometimes people get a working line dog and do not realize the time commitment in filling its day with activity.........somtimes breeders take them back and sell them for reasonable price.
