my girls heat tolerance sucks (she is black and it takes like 4 min in the summer heat to get her tired out.) while my wifes dog (red sable) is not as bad, than my other dog (white and black shep) also is not as bad.
give lots of water and be care full (I tried to find the email) but a member of one of the schh clubs here in tx just lost a dog to heat exposure and the temp was only in the 80 (not evan the 90's like tex is known for)
I have a dark dog too and she does a lot better at a lean weight. I train in Florida so we have to be very careful.
Is there a simple tell tale sign of when the dog should go back inside? I am also in FL and take my dog out to play during the days, but have been limiting it to 5 mins of frisbee or training at a time because thats about as long as it takes for his coat to be too hot to the touch and him wanting to lay down instead of chase after a frisbee.
I live in East Texas and it is getting very hot all ready this year. I have a four mounth old GSD that we got out of washington. Picked him up at the airport april 6th. He must have thought he died and went to hell as he was gone from his litter mates sent on a plane and then into 80 plus degree temps. I just take him out regularly and haven't pushed him to hard and he is aclimating well. We spend alot of time at the lake and around the hose. He still hates to get into the car when it has been sitting in the sun but knows it is a good thing.
Tollerance to heat can be a double edge sword. You see in several of the high drive dogs that they just have more tollerance to the heat than they have good sense. A very high drive will actually work himself to death if you allow it. In Texas its common for dogs to kill themselves in the kennel because they just won't sit still. You have to protect them from themselves and crate them indoors. Good conditioning is very important, but good judgement is more important.I believe heat kills more police dogs than the badguys do and its real hard to explain how you let it happen.
