I read on another board that Sheila Booth (Purely Positive) was successful at Schutzhund using only positive methods. Is this for real, no corrections? Please enlighten me.
The only thing needed for evil to exist is for good men to stand by and do nothing!!!
Yes this is possible, but it the type of dog that makes it possible. I believe a very willing dog will do this for you. A good example is Ivan Balibanov. He would be the one to talk to on this subject.
I think that his method is a good start for someone trying to avoid useing corrections. I have watched many handler/dog teams "argueing" on the field because of the ever present corrections. I still have yet to use a pinch/choke/e-collar on my malinois. I am not saying I haven't tapped him on the butt with a foot, or used no, or even taken him from the training field. (something I should use more of) I find that if a new trainer wades his way thru the positives jungle for a while, then when the negatives are needed it will be more obvious when the correct timing is. Ivans method with my limited exposure to that style of training made a lot of sense to me. I am also working on useing negatives that affect the dog, but leave me out of it like taking him off the field, sending the decoy away and working obedience instead of bitework. I'll take anymore suggestions along those lines if you have them Will.
I don’t think you will find too many people who are still into totally “old school” Kohler type training with heavy correction, non motivational training.
On the other hand, I don’t think you end up with a totally well rounded dog with all motivational training either. There is a balance in there somewhere that each trainer needs to find….. dog dependant.

This was my thought also. Has anybody seen her dog at a Schutzhund Trial?

Yes,
I saw Shelia's dog at a few trials and she came to our Schutzhund Club of Orlando to work with Gottfried Dildei while they were writing a book together.
She did very well in the late 1980's winning a Regional Championship in DVG and I think she took 2nd in the SchH USA Nationals and went on to the World ( her dog was "Espe", if I remember correctly ).
Now with all that info, she came from a heavy AKC Obedience background in which she did *very* well also - she used mainly AKC style training during her heavy competition days to most people's observation. Which seemed to just be a commonly used mixture of compulsion and food motivation.
She then drifted off to Agility and pretty much faded from the public eye.
As we are on the topic of Schutzhund trainer- I wanted to ask of a good Schutzhund trainer around nyc. I was talking with one of the board members the other day and she pointed out there is a really good "Schutzhund" trainer in the nyc vicinity.
I live in one of the suburbs of nyc and am looking really hard for a good Schutzhund trainer. I looked on the internet, local people and even police departmetn. NO good luck. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> Any idea?
