I know that this has been discussed before but I can't seem to find it. Kato is 7 months old now and does not lift his leg to pee. Maybe thats a good thing. But when he really has to go, like first thing in the morning, he has a tendency to pee on his front leg. Or he will just stand there as it runs down the grass into a puddle at his feet. He does not squat, he stands. Is there a way to teach him to lift or I am better off if he doesn't lift?

I taught my current dog to lift his leg as an OB command when he was 5months old, just for s**t-n-giggles cause I thought it'd be cool to watch a 5month old lift his leg, he didn't do it on his own until 8months. I had to be there most of the time to tell him the command "pick your leg up", LOL! Their young, their like men their aim and control improves with age. Unless you get down there and help him direct his hose, your going to have to let it be, LOL!!

I would like to hear some more feedback on this one. My pup is almost 9 months now and he still doesn't lift his leg. He also pees all over his front leg which is dripping when he comes back into the house. Will he ever figure this out??

Yes. One of the toughest dogs I ever had never lifted his leg that I saw. Besides getting urine all over and needing to get cleaned up, I wouldn't worry at all. Not even a little bit. No big deal.
I am smarter than my dog, your just not. |

It only matters if it bothers the handler. I`ve had some that did and some that didn`t.

My dog is 2 and doesn't lifts his leg. However the 1 and only time that he did we were at a rest stop on a trip. It seemed that smelling where other dogs had marked on a tree prompted him to do the same. He was already well over a year old at that time. In the 5 months since that he hasn't done it again. So how does one train a dog to lift his leg?

It is a learned behavior, I read somewhere...when they "overmark", the nieghborhood pee post, both to cover who they just "read" and higher as if to misinform others of their largeness. Supposedly, they can determine age, health, sex and if in heat from a few drops of other's urine. How they determine that claim is mysterious to me, but they do have some incredible sense of smell.
The same book claims that canines in the wild do this too,
as well in roll in foul smelling yuck to 'cover' their scents, and confuse the predators hunting them. Again,
not too sure how one could proof the conjecture, but it
could be a logical theory explaining why some furballs dig rolling on roadkill, or worse.

My nearly 6 month old male actually walks or runs while peeing. Yes, it always ends up on his feet.

My 17 month old GSD lifts his leg only when he's away from home. I don't think my JRT allows it in HIS yard.
