I have a 7yo GSD and a 2yo GSD/lab mix, tonight as I was putting them out for the last time before bed I saw my GSD skid to a stop in the middle of the yard, the mix just trotted past her so I figured everything was fine. I was wrong. When they had finished, I opened the door and was drenched in that horrific smell. Unfortunatly I didn't realize that the smell was coming off my lab mix until he had bolted past me and was rubbing himself off all over the carpet. I did the soap/sauce bath, but I'm not sure that it worked, since the whole house smells funky now. Is there anything else I should do? Is this something that requires a vet trip? My GSD, by the way, does not smell at all.... What an awful reason to have to post for the first time...
I use that dish soap, hydogenperoxide and whatever else mixture and it works great. Nothing more needed done. As far as your carpet. When you think the smell is gone, have someone come over and ask them if they can smell it. You can get used to the smell and think it's gone and the next thing you know, you smell skunky too.
Massengales douche works great! Buying it by the case can sure get a few raised eyebrows in the store. I just smile and tell em I met a nice lady in the parking lot that wants to go home with me.
There's also a product at petsmart called 'Skunk Away' but that's not nearly as much fun to buy.
Also, no matter how clean you THINK you get the dog, every time it rains, it'll smell for a loooong time.
Earth Dawg is right-a spoonful of moisture down the road re-activates the fun.
If I remember right, the spray is an oily solution, and most "cures" are acids which cut the bonding agent and the stink at the same time. I use tomato juice and soap. Never heard the Massengil thing before, but I'd sure like to hear the story behind how someone found that out...
My posts reflect my own opinions, and not those of the Marine Corps or the United States.

Everytime it rains my dog smells bad anyway, if he got skunked, would it be that much worse?
Good luck with this, I have no clue what to do, but that comment made me laugh.
The suggestion to have a "de-skunk kit" preassembled is an excellent one. The mixture really does work well and they usually seem to get skunked at night when the stores are closed. Having it assembed would prevent the "Where the @$$% is the baking soda!!!!" rampages at midnight....
When one of my dogs got a really good skunking last year, in the following kerfuffle of getting her deskunked the spigot got knocked off the bathtub, the ensuing blast of water knocked off my glasses and made me lose my grip on the dog, who then proceeded to run the length of the house shaking violently as she went - we had baking soda/peroxide solution up to the 4 ft or more levels on what seemed like every wall and piece of furniture she had passed by on her escape. The baking soda mixture makes a pretty good wall cleaner - not the recommended useage or method of appication though.
To my horror, my little angel actually brought the "bad black and white kitty" into the house at 3am and let it free. From this board I had read about using Dr Bronner's peppermint castille soap and had purchased some in case. It worked like a charm! I even used it in the carpet cleaner and washing machine to deal with the rugs and drapes.
I am hoping she learned a lesson rather than developed a vendetta..
