i understand the basics for genetics...dominant and recessive gene in dogs...and that both parents have to carry that recessive gene in order for the dog to have whatever trait that recessive gene did for the dog...and i have read that it is not known what traits are recessive or dominant in dogs..
Would long hair be considered a recessive gene if none of the brothers, sisters, parents or grand parents have had this gene.
how would you do a search to find the gene in your dogs pedigree to see if other dogs have had this gene????
if the recessive gene has to be in both parent then it had to be in one of the grandparent and great grandparent etc...
same thing on the sire and dam side till one dog got this gene and then the recessive becomes a dominant....am i understanding this right???????
how many litters have been breed till this trait shows up???? could you have like 5 litters before this gene trait show up?????
does weak nerve equal weak temperment????...and if they are the same and it is a genetic trait...then both parent would have to have this genetic trait....if it's a recessive gene then how many litters would be bred before this trait would show up in one of the dogs...and because it shows in one dog does that mean that the two parents should be bred again????? even if say 12 of the other dogs dont show the genetic trait??? it still have the genetic trait in him/her??????
like color,hair length,temperment, size and health issues
There is a very good book on genetics called "Control of Canine Genetic Diseases" by George A. Padgett. Some of the things it discusses are:
1. Background of the problem
2. the development of pedigrees
3. modes of inheritance
4. tables and probabilities
5. interpretation and use of pedigrees
6. test mating
This is just a small example of what he discusses in the book. I found it very interesting that every dog, no matter what the breed, has at least five genetic faults, whether it be an actual disease or an undesirable trait, ie, floppy ears in german shepherds. If you have an honest breeder who can tell you what some of the faults are, it is a stepping stone on how to track the traits by using a chart if you plan to breed and develope your own pedigree. I suggest reading this book as it can explain much better than I can the genetics and how they work.
