OK this is kind of an odd post for me to write, excuse my probably incorrect but somewhat understandable terminology lol. Around my dogs penis he frequently has a small amount of ejaculatory discharge, but it's kinda green in color. He often leaves small droplets of this discharge around the house, I think it's when he runs up and down the stairs or shakes himself out or something because there's small greenish-white droplets along the bottom of the wall. My dad was watching him one weekend when I had to go out of town and said it was kinda brownish and had a strong foul smelling odor, n that when he was a boy n his family had a Boxer that had a similar problem it meant that it was an infection that I'm supposed to clean and disinfect.
He's un-neutered and I have no intention of neutering him till he's fully matured at the least, unless there is a medical reason for me to do so. He's 14 months old. Is this a problem? Is there an infection? Should I take him to the vet? If so - when I walk into the vet's office, is there a correct name for me to refer to this as? Is there something I can buy at the pet store (I've seen anti-septic stuff for sale at the pet store that disinfects wounds n scratches etc ) will this work?
Even if the general consensus is gonna be "take him to the vet" - could you at least tell me a single phrase that I can tell my vet to explain the situation without having to print off this thread and hand it to the receptionist?

Anything yucky smelling.. go to the vet.
A small amount of "gunk" hanging around at the end of the ol' red rocket pocket is prefectly normal. We are a primarily "boy" household (6 male dogs) and they all have it. I don't ever bother about it with the kennel dogs, but with my house dog I have to "wipe" every now and then, just because it gives me the eebeegeebees

"penile discharge"
"malodorous"
"greenish-brown in color"
You are correct; all indicators of an infection. If he was my dog I would take him to the vet as opposed to trying any treatments off the shelf.
Good luck & keep us posted!

Your dog might have a bladder infection. I had a female and the antibiotics didn't get it the first time. She must of had a high tolerance to pain, I didn't see any of the normal signs of infection. Aweek or so later she had a greenish yellow discharge. Took her back and showed the vet they gave her stronger meds. Try to collect discharge and urine before you go. A wire hanger stretched out and attatched to a paper cup makes it easier to collect urine.
I am smarter than my dog, your just not. |

Aw come on Mike ... The vets have heard and seen it all. It can't be that difficult to say that "my dog has a brownish/greenish discharge coming from his penis" should it??

Oh my god that had me dying.
Thank-you all for the advice, I shall make an appointment to see my vet.
And Jeff - that cup trick, wow... genius! hehe. I'll bring them samples if I have the opportunity.

It took me how many sentences to describe it in this thread?? LOL, thats a good summary, I think I'll use that. Now, having read the responses here, I can go into the vet's knowing it's probably an infection and knowing what to tell them.

vet technicians took a look at him for me n he had the "discharge" on his penis when he went in, they said if he's eating fine n doesn't seem to be in pain when he pees then its all just part of having an un-neutered male reaching sexual maturity n I shouldn't worry about it, it can be greenish or yellowish n no big deal.

That's good news but I'm curious; did they say anything about the "strong foul smelling odor" your father noticed? I think that would still concern me.

She didn't seem concerned about it and I didn't press the concern since there's not much they can do test-wise anyway. I haven't smelled anything like it since it happened, I figure if I notice something unusual over the next week or 2 I'll go back again, I'm with my dog almost all day so nothing goes un-noticed.
If anyone has any experience with this - perhaps someone who's bred dogs and might confirm that a dogs ejaculate just naturally has a strong odor like that, or has experienced this with a dog and knows the cause, feel free to post it.
