I read someplace where shedding is triggered by light.
Shorter days, less shedding, longer days, more shedding,
and that with electric lights and indoor dogs shed more.
Dunno if this was scientific or not, but seems plausible.
Regardless, I always get a chiwowa size fur ball from my GSD, and nearly as much from my spitz, who I also clip in
the summer as without doing so, he is simply uncomfortably
hot and constantly panting, lights or not.
Does anyone know why you shouldn't brush or rake back to front, against the grain, so to speak? Someone suggested that is wrong, but didn't say why.
It can be painfull or uncomfortable for the dog. You may also break hairs off which may become ingrown and cause infection. Plus, it is more work.
I shaved my retired PSD with a lion cut one summer. It looked neat and the dog seemed to like the reprieve from the heat. He was mostly an indoor dog at the time.
Hey Vicki,
Goldens are another double coat dog. I would clip my Springer (shave him right down on a 1/4 inch comb), but he is a single coat and that fur just keeps growing.
Taking a pair of scissors to your dog to trim him up wouldn't hurt, but I still stand by not shaving a double coat dog. The outer coat offers protection and is a water repellent and the undercoat offers insulation. Taking away that outer coat may not be beneficial.
I am not a groomer, for sure...(my poor Springer certainly got some botch jobs <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> so maybe a learned, professional groomer may jump in here. (Cindy?!!) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
