Kidding! Kidding! Seriously tho... I just spent literally an hour (one whole Magnum PI episode) using the rake and the shedding blade on my dog, I filled up and overflowed a full waste basket worth of hair, I can do this almost every day - does anyone have any tips? Do groomers spend this much time brushing GSD's hair too?
Everytime I think I'm done, I change directions from front to back to top to bottom and suddenly I'm getting huge balls of fluff on the ground yet again. The extra long hair by the base of his tail on his back seems to be a storage area for hair, and the white hair on the back of his legs is a neverending source of hair too.
If anyone has some type of tip so I don't need to devote an hour a day to grooming my hairy buddy over there, I'd love to hear it. If an hour of grooming a day is perfectly normal, then I guess I have no choice, but if I'm missing something, pleeeaaase enlighten me

I gave it serious thought to do so. Summer in the South is murder as you are well aware of. My club doesn't start training until 1900. I have to keep the kiddie pool full if I train during the day.

Buy a blower (4hp+ for a GSD) and it cuts down the time significantly.

I brush our dogs constantly, My female seems to be alot worse about the shedding than my male, I get a walmart bag from him each brushing..but her I fill a couple of em easily, even my puppy is starting to shed alot( he is around 4 months)..run your hand down his back once or twice and ya got fur flying everywhere..The joys of having numerous animals in a home I guess.

My dog was a serious shedder until I got the Furminator & started supplementing her diet. I use the Furminator once every other week (with a slicker brush occasionally otherwise) and she gets B-naturals Immune Blend (a mix of probiotics, digestive enzymes, vitamins, & minerals) and their Green Blend (kelp, etc.) She's been on the supplements for about a month and a half. Her shedding has nearly stopped pretty good for humid as heck Michigan, I think.

GSD's have a double coat and shaving is NOT recommended. The double coat works as an insulator, both heat and cold. Shaving it would be worse for the dog.
I know a guy who shaved his husky's coat (another double coat dog) and it is now seriously messed up and does not grow in properly. Don't know why, but it doesn't.
A raw diet also cuts down on shedding. The only issues with fur and my dog is when she blows her coat.
Mike, don't know if I misread your post or not, but only brush in one direction.(With the lay of the fur) I hear ya about the fur on the back legs, seems never ending! But don't try to brush all the fur out!

As far as BARF and shedding,,,,,,,I think it may just be the dog. There are other advantages to BARF but I did not really find the shedding to be one of them. Maybe it is natures way of keeping the dog clean You sure don't have to bathe GSDs like a lot of other dogs.
I have decided that one day the hairballs will sprout legs and grow into another dog.
Does the furminator really work? I have been thinking of the Mars Coat king but both are much more expensive than a simple rake.
My working line dog has much less undercoat than my showline x working line mix and sheds considerably less.

I've had the same experience as Maggie with a raw diet and less shedding. I only see a lot of hair when they blow their coats. I fed my first GSD kibble and she was a constant hairball.
I do give them a quick brush every day, but it only takes about 15 minutes for both dogs. The amount of hair that comes out of them is small.

The mars coat king cuts out hair. Many people swear by shaving their dogs. The double coat stuff doesn't seem to work against heat that I have seen. If you shave your dog, sunburn is a concern. When a dog lives in a house, it is pretty much the same temperature all the time. Dogs respond to this by shedding all the time. When we were kids dogs lived outside and definately had regular shedding schedules. I would try fish oil or linoleic acid. They can work, but I don't know if all dogs respond.
I am smarter than my dog, your just not. |
