I have adopted a rescue Rottie from a lady who was, due to health reasons, unable to handle 'Jewel' any longer.
I've had my hands full, she is quite dominant, so I have been working with her with much success, I might add.
My experience with the breed has been mainly from lots and lots of research and raising my RottieX 'Parttweiler'- Ginger.
Jewel's coat is much thicker, and somewhat wavy on her shoulder and back of neck, and she has the distinctive labrador odor. She is otherwise a nice 110 lb. BYB Rottie girl, but I wonder if there is a 'lab in the woodpile' somewhere. Do pure Rotties have such thick, coarse, glossy, wavy fur (it is actually very luxuriant).
Ginger, who is 1/2 Rott, has a much shorter coat, is much less glossy, but is much softer, too.
Below are links to a face shot and the first meeting of the 'titans', called 'uneasy truce' (we've had some dominance issues with them, but they are getting better)
Do Rotties have a 'lab' smell? Ginger is very smell-less, except when she has found some livestock poop or dead toads

From what I see, we are looking at a rottie. The wavy coat is often termed a defect in the breed, but I consider it minor at best. It's most often on the back and neck as you described. In fact, some dogs that I have seen from the pound have bad coats that iwll get nicer as they are well cared for over time.
There are different lines/types of Rotts, like anything else. That dog looks identical to my neighbor's german-bred rott(wavy, thicker coat). She definitely appears to be pure rott.
from the photo she looks to be pure based on the markings. my cousin breeds them and just like all dogs there is some variation. i have seen a pure rot puppy have curly hair. the sire and dam were imported from germany with papers. i wouldn't worry she is yours and she is nice. get her in shape and she will be awesome
