What a great philisophical debate. And we have some of the greatest writers in history pointing towards arguments in both directions. Science fiction authors have been writing about this for years. Heinlien and Herbert to name some of the more prominent ones. In both of their cases, they speak of it as a way to grow replacement body parts for people who are injured. Herbert takes it a step further by using the clones as a way to imprint the persons memories, and use cloning as a form of immortality.
Cloning is like any scientific advance. Nuclear fusion has both improved our quality of life, and taken away from it. Improved with cheaper, cleaner (for the air) energy, and taken away with the threat of nuclear arms, etc.
As with anything, it is all in the hands that hold the knife. The kife can cut a person, yes, but that doesn't mean I will turn away from it, I would still like to be able to cut a piece of fruit.
I'm an advocate for scientific advances. Unfortunately, cloning will have negative effects along with positive ones.
They that can give up essential liberty to obtain temporary safety deserve neither.
Anybody see the Arnie movie "The 6th Day"? People have their pets cloned after death, and people end up getting cloned too. The cloned pets can be "modified", to have softer teeth, alter color, n some other things I forget. The biggest flaw in this bugged me thru the entire movie. You can replicate someones physical being... you can transfer memories and personality to the clone... but the clone still isn't YOU, so when you die... then what? It's not like your "soul" moves over into your clone and you continue living - the only benefit from the process is that your loved ones feel as though you are still with them, but once you're dead you don't care if you have a clone or not, you're dead. I'd like to see where they're going with this whole cloning thing.
I wasn't worried so much about the philsophical but enviromental. If you guys remember from history class the great potatoe famine in Ireland due to a blight was do to a lack of genetic diversity. Potatoes are not indigious to Ireland, they come from the Americas. They only brought over a few types; and potatoes were planted by cutting off one of the "eyes" off of a spud and planting it. Almost effectively a clone of the original plant. Which made the entire crop vulnerable to disease.
Had to bem in South Korea also so that they can do more animal cruelty. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />
I agree clonning in animal will and can get in a disaster.
