QUOTE: I recently just got a GSD, I have heard from a couple of people to use Advantix and heartgaurd. Any suggestions? END
Do you mean heartworm prevention in general, or whether Heartgard is the best brand? Because as for heartworm prevention in general -- yes. Your vet will definitely tell you about that at an early checkup.
The flea-tick prevention -- my own opinion is yes. Don't know where you live, and I think others will weigh in.
I use Heartgard and Advantage - don't know anyone that uses K9 Advantix. I was told if I have a tick problem, go with Frontline, otherwise use Advantage.
I agree with Frontline for fleas and ticks. It was the only thing that kept them off my housecat in Texas, where those suckers always manage to follow you into your house.
My puppy uses Frontline, and I worm her regularly. Heartworm isnt a problem in the climate I live in, luckily, so fortunately she doesnt need meds for that.
Shes in the middle of getting her lyme vac, because its a major danger her. Otherwise, thats all she gets.
I use Stronghold on my cat (the fleas arent so bad here so she doesnt need frontline anymore), which is Revolution in the US I think. I chose this because of the anti-helminth meds - just in case.
Sentinel isnt available here, unfortunately, or I would probably be using it on both of them <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
My old guy gets revolution (one of the rare ones that safe for dogs with DM), trying advantix on the rest. Will be going back to frontline after killing a flea the other day. Haven't noticed the mosquitos not hanging around them either. Back to ivermec and frontline.
Thanks. After reading everyone replies im glad i havent order any yet. Looks like they all have advantages and disadvantages. We live in the Baltimore area so mosquitos are bad and was just diagnosed with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever a couple months ago.
