Working at both a shelter and an veterinary emergency clinic in inner city philly I've seen that look to many times. It made me cry too. The sad reality is some people could read that and say "it's just an animal.."

It makes me cry, too.
And for me it’s not even so much the needle at the end as it is the fear and loneliness and (I believe) grief the animal goes through first.
If I’m projecting, it’s not much. They are highly social pack animals whose pack (whether it’s one person or a family or whatever) suddenly betrays and strands them......not to save the rest of the pack or any reasonable thing like that, but because one of their pack has become inconvenient......

Thank God for no-kill shelters, or this would have been my dog. Whoever owned him drove him up into the hills and dumped him when he was only 18 mos. old. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> He spend another 6 in the shelter and I'm so glad I found him. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Okay, and then there are the sucker dog owners like me who toured a half-million dollar home with my m-i-l today and when she asked me what I thought of it, I said "Nope, can't have 4 dogs in a house like this. No dogs, no go." I'd rather have a simple, comfortable home with my crew than some cold, hoity-toity place. It just isn't a home without fur all over it!
