Hey all;
I know I have posted a few times, but I guessed I would take some time out and tell every one a little about my self.
First off let me just say one thing. I talked to Will yesterday on the phone, and just let me say, for any one who has not talked to this man outside the forums, Will is a super smart, layed back, easy and great to talk to guy. Im just glad I have weekends free on my cell, my wife would have killed me, I could have talked to him for days. So, thanks Will for taken some time out of your busy day to talk to me. I hope to be seeing you soon out in the field. cant wait!
Anyhow, APBT are my breed, I have been around them since my dad brought his first one home in the early 80's. Im only 24, pretty young, yet I like to think Im not as thicked headed as some of todays youth and love learning. I have a wife and 5 year old daughter that just loves to walk the dogs and thinks there hers, witch is great to me I love to see the bond she has with my male dog, there like best of friends. Plus I love the look on peoples faces when my daugter walks into Petsmart with a 60 pound pit with cropped ears.
Anyhow, I have been reading this forum for some time now, as you can see I just singed up and began talking a few days ago. I learned alot just reading old posts, some dating back close to two years. This is really one of the best forums, I have tryed tons of forums in the past and all I ever get when I say something is "aww there cute, O so pretty" and there is nothing wrong with that, but I never seemed to get any help, till I found this forum.
So, what is every one elses fav. breed? And what do all you guys love to do with your dogs?
To some it up, Thanks ED, Will and every one else that has made the DVDs and forums posable and keep this place up and running, for people like me and all the other 7000+ users.
David.

It would be hard to list a favorite breed of mine. I love just about all dogs. Big dogs, not really a fan of the little yapping breeds (no offence intended, just my opinion). I guess it would make sense for me to say a Husky was one of my favs, then Labs/Retrievers and GSDs. But like I said, I love them all.
What do I like to do with my dog? Right now I just like to keep her from shitting on the floor. that and keeping her teeth of my pants, (she's already torn a hole in two pair by biting and pulling...silver lining? good prey drive...) Hopefully I'll have a lot more activities to share with her when she grows up. ( I have a 12 week old Husky) I'd love to teach her to pull a wagon, or weights.

Thanks for sharing.
Im really big into the "Irondog" sports. I really like doing the weight pulling/carting, sprinting, hardest hitting dog and hang time. Stuff like this I have gotten a hugh kick out of over the years. I am also into OB, protection, tracking/trailing(some for hunting) and some agility.

I'd love to teach my pup to track, also. I don't think she'd be good at personal protection (then again, that's just what these sites say about huskies, maybe she could be) I'd at least like to train her to protect (or just growl) on command...but I doubt this will happen, as it's probably not a realistic goal. Anyone ever train a husky for Personal Protection???

Realistic, sure its realistic. I hope some one else chims into this post and helps you out on this. You may even want to post it in a new topic.
I might be wrong, but here is my take on this. Your dog has to develop some defence drive. I feel befor a dog will protect you it has to have anuff confidence to protect/defend its self. I also think this comes with age and is honed and shapend with proper traning.
I have seen many dogs that if you say something like, "watch'em", or "what is it", they will start to bark and growl, these same dog would not bite you, or take a bite if told, but they would bark and growl if given that command, or there owner started saying that. This kind of traning is pretty easy in most cases. I kind of relate it to a dog barking at a door bell or a car door slamming in the drive way. A pup some time will not dark, as they get older they start to dark, they have made a bond with you and a bond with its home. That is kinda instinctual in some dogs and breeds, even very small ones. But, I think you can get your dog to grow or bark on command with no problem as it gets older.
I know I dont have to tell you and I know you know, but the best thing in the world you can do for your dog is, let it be a puppie. All the fun stuff will come in time. Befor you know it, your dog will be doing stuff you did not think it could do, it comes fast to!
Some one else chim in with your opinions. These are mine.
Goodluck.
David.

Jennifer - you might be able to teach her to bark on command - I haven't had much good luck even teaching any of my huskies to "speak"(really - I am more interested in "be quiet"). While generally not a barky breed, some siberians are real "talkers" though and usually can "argue" when things are not going their way, or when they feel thwarted in some endevour. They are NOT suited for personal protection in any form as they have very low defense, and the prey drive they have generally doesn't transpose to toys like a ball or a tug. Yes they can be trained but they are not very of the "lab/sheperd/border collie" ilk. They bore easy and don't do too good with a lot of reps. They can also be awesomely stubborn and have a large dose of northern breed "what's in it for me?". They will make a good watchdog - as they will watch people come in your house, watch them load up your stuff and watch them drive away with it. As for tracking - well the jury is still out on that one - I'm still working on that one .....

Lynn,
I don't know about Huskies in general, but my pup has no problem transferring her prey drive to toys and inanimate objects. Just today I had to wrestle my dish towel away from her which she literally jumped in the air to grab out of my hands. Her favorite toy is a teddy bear and she will also chase a toy if I throw it.
I'm new at training so I don't know if any of that even matters. I'd like to think my dog can be trained to do anything. Seems like, from what I've read here on the site, that she has pretty darn good drive for a pup her age, and will probably do well in drive training.
