Has anyone experienced any adverse reactions to Advantix or Frontine when used on a puppy? My 12 week old puppy to be will be in a country with lots of fleas and ticks, and I am not sure what to use if anything?
Thanks for any advise.
Organophosphate poisoning (frontline/ advantage etc) can happening in any animal, thou it is typically safe. I would use it if you are in an area where there are fleas (fleas are an intermediate host for tapeworm) and ticks (carry lyme ehrlichiosis and babesiosis). Signs of Organophosphate poisoning include hypersalivation, muscle tremors, nystagmus (irregular movements of the eyes) and nausea. If you put it on your dog and you notice early on toxic signs give the dog a bath (trying to wash off the pesticide) and take the dog to the vet. Reactions are rare, but it's best to be prepared. Is your dog on heartworm medicine too?
i use frontline on all my current dogs and the dogs i raised in the past...works great and didnt have any problems with side effects..no fleas, no ticks ..except the side effect of pulling my money out of my wallet...that always hurts....but like any product still check your dog daily for ticks and fleas

I just ordered Advantix for my pup, the mediication goes on their skin not into the blood stream. and repells mosquitos too.
It is applied topically, but I thought it was absorbed into the blood stream and hence distributed to the rest of the body. If not, how does it protect all over when you apply it on one spot?
John, Strongid T works effectively against strongles -mostly round worm. Mosquitoes are a necessary intermediate host of heart worm. They carry dirofilaria (heart worm larva)from one dog to another. If you are going to be in an area with high mosquito I would put the dog on heart worm preventative. Advantix does repel mosquitoes, but if one gets by you are taking a chance with your pups life.

"After application to the surface of the skin, the active ingredient (fipronil) dissolves in the sebum which is the natural oils covering the hair and skin. It then spreads to all areas of the body surface within 24 hours of application in 2 ways: It moves down a concentration gradient (osmolarity) from the point of application within the sebum. The normal body movement of the animal acts to encourage the spread across the skin." - http://frontline.uk.merial.com/faq/dogs/faq.asp
