Our Rottie rescue had a prong collar on when we picked her up, and I am happy to say that she has started leading so well that I don't need to use it in most cases.
The really great thing is I adjusted it to fit my 12 year old, very stubborn Australian Cattle Dog who doesn't lead well, and can get suddenly deaf to any command. Within two walks down to the paper box, he is not pulling my arm off, choking himself, and sits when asked! (well, mostly--still working on that!)
I read the directions on the proper use of the collar right here on this website and *sonofagun* it works!
whenever I have gotten a dirty look from someone about the prong, I have always countered with, "would you rather have him bite someone? run in the street wild??". After a few years, I just stopped answering. If more people would use power steering properly, less dogs would be running wild and menancing the public!
