Tonight my 6 months old puppy sprained his lower back (his hip joints). This is how it happened. Usually I direct his attention to something else but this time I didn’t think it would be a big deal.
He was in his down position (sitting on his side) and started to hump. It lasted for few seconds and was very intense. Later when he tried to get up and walk his back legs did not move as they were locked. So he whined and lied down. But in 5 minutes he started to walk again and went to urinate. I did notice that his legs were not in a normal position when urinating. Though he was walking but I felt that one of his legs was shaking.
I am going to call my vet in the morning. Any suggestions? My night is gone as I am not able to sleep. It looks like he is in pain. I patted him for 10 minutes and now he is sleeping.
1. As he is walking normally, is it only time that will heel the pain and I should give him plenty of rest and postpone his ppd training? I gave him homeopathic medicine for pain and swelling.
2. Is it that the vet cannot do anything more as the pup is walking and will say to wait and see?
3. Has this ever happened to anyone else?
4. If he is not able to stand in a normal position to poop, should I rush him to the hospital?
5. If an x-ray is taken, will it show anything abnormal?
I don't know answers to most of your questions... but any physical exercise and training should be avoided if your dog is suffering any type of physical pain - you want the dog to enjoy the work, not suffer thru it.
Your dog tried to hump the ground in a down position? lol thats kinda funny, dogs do the darndest things.
Hope everything works out ok, if you have an emergency vet in the area just give em a call n describe what happened n get their advice. They may refuse to give you an opinion without seeing him but most good vets will have some idea of what to tell you in these situations as to wether you need to act NOW or if it can wait till morning so you're not paying stupid amounts for night time vet care.
