Is there any reason to leave these intact? My pup came home from the breeder with them and a vet friend said that they should have been removed at birth as they are attached to a major artery. Should my breeder have done this?
Front or rear dew claws? What breed? Some breeds call for double dew claws, some breeds require the removal of only the rears, some breeds require the removal of all.
But if you're talking about GSDs and the front dew claws, don't touch them...they have a purpose, some dogs can actually use them like little thumbs. If you're talking about rear ones on a GSD, then get them removed.
My Mal pup has rear dew claws too! Never seen that before.. they are HUGE. I did not get him until he was around 10 wks, I 'heard' that was too old to get them removed that it was major surgery.. is this true? I have to do SOMETHING with them! LOL!
Sammy, our Vet has removed them before by just sedating the dogs, clipping them off, then putting some of that NewSkin stuff over them. Once the dog is an adult, it's a little more difficult, but still the same deal (basically).
Regarding Labradors, the standard says "dewclaws may be removed" and doesn't hint that they have to be. So I guess it's really up to you on that.
My GSD that I acquired at 4.5 months had front and back dew claws. The back ones were floppy and were removed when she was spayed at 6 months. The vet said if they are floppy it is easier to remove them. Sometimes they aren't. She did have about 5 stiches on each and it was a bigger deal than if they had been removed as a small pup. She is doing fine now though. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
