YEs, you can but I have been very dissapointed in the Vari Kennel lately. Thier doors used to be SO MUCH stronger than they are now. I have an old one and it holds my dogs no problems. I have recently bought 2 new ones and my dogs have been able to pull and open the door to the crates (can't do that to the old one!).
I talked to a freind about it who has been in the pet store business for some time and she said that the company did change over several years ago and changed thier crates so that they could compete better in the market (make them less expensive to customers)....only problem is they also made them cheaper peroid!
The Ferrarri is a better crate but it is wider so harder to fit into a vehicle if you want 2 side by side.
I have two Vari-Kennel 'Deluxe' crates and also one Vari-Kennel 'Pet Porter'. At first glance they look similar.
The 'Deluxe' crates are superior to the 'Pet Porters'. The plastic is thicker and stronger, better door, latch and locking system all around the crate. Better for plane flights.
We have a Sky Kennel with the 4pt locking door. Still not enough to stop a high drive male that wants to get out during a training session. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
My older Brawnson son could bust that door open like it was a dried twig...and did so on a couple of occassions when he heard action going on out on the field.
I'll be building some of my own aluminum crates with better reinforcements in the doors in the near future.
The 2 new vari kennels I have are the Deluxe ones. My male broke out within 10 min. of putting him in thier during a training session as well. (was working another dog on the sheep and not him).
I wasted precious budget money on a veri kennel for our station this year. Within two weeks my dog bent the door. I’m getting one of those all aluminum kennels next year.
There is a way to strengthen the door of the Vari-kennel. If you get two pieces of flat metal 3/4" wide by about 12" long, drill a few holes through both of them and bolt them together vertically on the crate door, it will not allow the door to flex outward and pop open. That will solve one issue with the Vari-kennel. The other issue is the plastic breaking where the metal door pins run thruogh it. Once that happens, it's shot.
