I have a white GSD, he is 2 yrs old. I wanted to know the guidelines for him being a personal p. dog. I read the leerburg website and I saw the articles on "hard dogs, soft dogs, and sharp dogs" I think Dewey (Dogs Name) might have a sharp temperment. How can i test this to see what catagory he falls into? If he does have a sharp temp. Will he still be able to be trained? I have worked with him in German; and I will admit he is Not the best trained dog but he listens most of the time. I also think that he might be a little of a 'hard dog' in some areas. Ex: when he is around other dogs that he knows he will not listen as well and it takes harder corrections for him to listen, But sometimes he'll yelp when i give them, and he'll just (Most of the time, if around distractions) go back to what he was doing before. And other times he listens when i correct him if there is no other dogs around him. I correct him sometimes using a choker(which does'nt work most of the time), a prong collar(works most of the time), and a electronic collar(he respects this, when its on him). I don't like to leave it on him to long because i have to have it so tight, his neck hair is so thick its hard to get contact w/ his skin. Hs is not a very big dog (65lbs.)but he is tall like a shepherd. If you need any more specific info. to answer this question then please email me.
I wouldn't use a choker, bad for his neck, especially if he doesn't respond well to it like my dog, use prong or e-collar.
My dog's e-collar can be a bit looser now that I ordered special "thick fur" probes on it - check with your e-collar manufacturer if they have these available, usually $10 or so.
Sounds like your dog is about the same size as my 16 month old, he's 66lbs and 24.5" tall but he doesnt look very big to me
Sorry, someone else will have to answer your questions on temprement and suitability for PPD work.
as an owner of a WGSD and talking to others, I wouldn't PPD/Sch train him only for the reason that Whites were allowed to breed only for looks and temperment, nerves and drive was not really a concern. They're out there, I haven't seen one. I work Max in obed and agility only. He's brave enough at the fence to give pause to any "evildoers"
I agree Kevin. That's what I do with Max. The Sch club members have been most helpful. Although I heard of clubs that won't let you bring a dog if the director deems it unsuitable or little potential for any title.
