After making too many mistakes to count with our first PPD, I was determined not to make them again. With Princess, our first, my kids were very involved with everything, housebreaking, feeding, walking, and training. Things worked out great. Now with Kato, I do all of the above. The problem that has come about is, as I see it, Kato's lack of respect for my son, Lars. Since my son is moving back home full time to go to college, Kato has begun marking on Lars' bed. I know the best thing to do would be for Lars to work with Kato in basic obedience, and keep his bedroom door closed. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Should I step back and let my son handle his feedings also? Or is working with him almost daily enough? I would be happy with Kato respecting him enough not to mark on his things, but I don't want to ruin the working bond that Kato and I have.
You have a dominant dog and I strongly recommend that you step up to the challenge of controlling it. USE A DOG CRATE !!! Closing the bedroom door is not the answer to a dominant dog pissing on your sons bed.
Five years ago I had a dog who growled at my son Jeff. Jeff was 15 back then.
This ended when the dog eventually attacked and badly bit Jeff. Jeff had taken the dog out of the kennel and he slipped on wet grass and fell down. The dog jumped on his and bit his upper arm. Jeff pulled himself up and held onto a tree while taking a bite on bicept. After screaming at the dog it released the bite - the dog walked about 15 feet away - turned and came back and lifted his leg on Jeff.
With this said - you need to pay attention here. Use a crate, use a muzzle and let your son get involved or keep the dog completly away from others. Go read the articles I have written on this on my web site.
Yes, Ed. I understand that he is a very dominant dog, but he is still just a pup. I want to nip the problem in the bud before it turns into issue as you described. This is my question... How involved should my son be? Do I hand over feedings, walks, etc, so that he learns that everything comes from my son? Or would having my son work with him in obedience be enough?
