The short: We imported a Schh3 female she has been here 6 weeks. We have introduced every imaginable toy to this dog and she shows no interest what-so-ever. I have thrown the toys and commanded her to “bring” and I got no response from her. I was starting to question her abilities. However, I bought the Schh3 dumbbell from Ed, it came yesterday, as soon as she saw it the light when on you could see it. I threw it and said bring and she immediately brought it to me just they way she should however after the forth retrieve… she lost interest.
My question is… once a dog is has been trained do they lose there interest in playing with drive building toys?
I want to build drive and focus but I am at a loss as to how since she is showing no interest. I am wondering if the arm… is what she is looking for?
Is there any other way to build drive and focus besides toys?
Thanks so much!

This is probably were the club would be most useful. One on one training after you watch the training dvds Imho would be very effective. I'm just a little surprised that the seller didn't offer some instructions on how to turn on your WunderHund. The breeder(s) I got my pup from have been most helpful in free training. Well, not quite free, I have to bring beer <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />.

Hi Julia,
When you say you have "introduced" toys, can you go into more detail about what you are doing/how you are introducing them?
Did you order Ed's "Building Drive..." DVD?

I have asked the breeder that imported her and he gave me the basics you would expect to work… things that are also on the Fink DVD but don’t work for her. The breeder that imported her doesn't know the dog personally, he just arranged the transaction. She flew from Germany to us.
When I visited his kennel he showed me how he turned his dog on... and it was as simple as putting on the suit. I am just wondering if my dog is saying to herself… phooey lady… this is puppy stuff… where’s the real prize.
I don’t know. I wish I could talk to the handler that worked her. I have tried to look the kennel up on the internet and they don’t seem to have a website or any contact info.
I would also be nice to know what kind of correction they used so I could continue doing something familiar. These are questions I should have asked before I bought her. Hind sight is 20-20. Now that the check has cleared they have no incentive to provide customer service.
Thanks dennis.

Hi Tracy,
We have tried teasing her with balls, tugs, ropes, bones, freebies, rags, squeaky toys, almost anything we can think of… she just looks at us like where crazy. Teasing: meaning laying it in front of her to see if she will accept it, offering it to her and then pulling it back, throwing it and asking her to bring, waving it in front of her, rolling it past her etc.
I did get the Building Drive and Focus but unless I can find something that interests her… we are at a dead end.
The only thing she seems really interested in is me. She is not possessive or dominating but she literally follows me everywhere and when we are among people here eyes are always on me. She is focused on keeping tabs on me. If I leave to go to the bathroom or take a shower… she is right there waiting when I come out.
I really don’t want to offer myself as a prey item ;-)
Thanks Tracy.

Is there a chance this dog was trained with just compulsion?
The fact that the dumbell illicited a response does not automatically mean the dog saw it as a prey/play item. It may have been taught a forced retrieve.

Ann,
That is a new concept to me (I am a newbie)... I am off to do some research on this forced retrieve subject... I might have to buy yet another video.
All your advice is so welcome and appreciated!
Thank You.

Julie,
There are other threads re this method:
http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/84312/an/0/page/0#84312
I am not a fan of compulsion training...just not my bag. I got the tape on forced retrieve and hated it, but then that's just me. As you will read in this thread there are trainers that swear by it...though as you will also read in the linked thread, Ed recommends the motivational method first.
BTW, as I understand it, once you start/do a forced retrieve you are unlikely to be able to go back to a motivational one...so if this dog has been taught that way, you're stuck with it.

After reading what forced retrieved means… I am convinced that I need to know more about how our dog was trained. Gosh I wish I had asked those questions upfront!

Why are you trying to build drive in a finished dog? Do you have her scorebook? Are you sure you didn't get robbed? I think that you really really need to find someone in your area to show you how to run this dog thru her routine in SCH3. Then you can see about the rest.
I am smarter than my dog, your just not. |
