Thanks Mike, great thread, but I would still like to get a few more comments wheather my dog is too young for 1 - 2 mile jogs and if asphalt is bad for him (a question you asked that did not get answered).
He is most likely old enough. Start off slow and see how it goes. Asphalt can toughen up the soles of his paws and keep his nails filed down, but if he is used to only soft dirt it will take a while for him to get used to it. Once again just build up slowly and monitor him closely. I think Ed has some thoughts on this, on this website, in the FAQs maybe.
If he is on a leash, and you are running next to him, I seriously doubt that it will be any big deal at all. How fast can you possibly go???? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
19 months old, for 2 miles, that should be no problem. It would NOT be enough exercise for my dogs at the same age. But the 'asphalt' thing would possibly be an issue if I kept them running on it for the 5 plus miles they could do.
I know I mostly try to exercise my dogs with off leash tears in the woods. If you have safe trails in your area, you can run the 'measly' 2 miles that's enough for most of us, and meanwhile your dog could easily be running more than twice that with the running back and forth and NOT being kept at a human pace.
That said, your dog obviously has to have a reliable 'come' for this method.

Thanks everyone. Just to answer a question, the reason for the run is not for his exercise but for mine and i want him with me. He still gets his speed laps chasing his tail in the park off lead. thanks again.
I started doing short distance jogging (slow pace) with my dog since he was 6 months old, mostly on dirt roads. I figured since he was running nonstop back and forth anyways when I was taking him for walks on a 16ft lead, I could run in a slow pace as well. He never seems to get tired, and he seems so excited and happy when I jog too. He is 8 months old now and he does not seem to have any problems at all. I like to hike so I have taken him for long hikes with me (4 to 5 miles) and he never stoped or got tired. I hope I’m not pushing him to much.
