Just curious about how many people started out with one breed of dog and then switched to a different breed. What was the thought process in doing so? I mean how could a person sell their personal dogs that they formed a bond with and then start all over with a different breed?

I believe this can happen when a handler/owner retires his dog(s), perhaps changing their status to house dog, with less working, as the dog ages, or perhaps changes focus as the dog(s) die.
For example, I know people with working earth dogs who have gradually retired one breed and switched to a different breed of earth dog.
In my own personal knowledge of this breed change with people I know, there was no selling involved.
That's just one personal observation, though!

Same for me, I started with Rotts and cpeting against GSD's wasn't pretty.
My coach told me "Will, you're bringingt he family car to the Indianapolis 500" ( which was pretty funny to hear with his thick german accent ).
So my Rottie bitch was seven years old and it was time to retire her from serious competition anyhow....so I bought a 16 month old untitled GSD import.
That changed everything for me, literally.
Ironically, my Rottie bitch lived until the age of 15 years and I used her as a demo dog for my advanced AKC classes until her last year. I miss her to this day...

Since it's your thread, I guess this isn't a hijack! (I mean switching from how people can change their breed affiliation to what working earth dogs are.)
I'm not a firsthand earth dog person to ask what orgs and titles there are. Old Earth Dog Bob on this forum would be, I believe.
However, my granddogs are BT*s, and a friend's dogs are JRT**s. One association I know about as a person who has earth dogs in her life but doesn't own them is the AWTA (American Working Terrier Ass'n), which has been around for 35 years or so.
Is that what you're asking? If you're asking more what earth dogs do, this link about the history of earthdogs and den trials, etc., will give a brief overview:

Ok now I understand. Thank you! I knew that JRT's were some of the best at digging to get to their prey. I have never heard of the term "Earth Dogs."
Will, how is it that you decided to buy an imoprt GSD as opposed to another Rottie? Was it a lack of good working lines? My problem with dogs are that I like too many different breeds, ACD's, Dobes, and others including some rare old breeds like the Argentine Dogo.
Please people I don't want to turn this thread into another topic concerning APBT's etc. I am just frustrated that I can't win the lottery and own enough land to have 100 dogs and of course trainers like Will to make life easier.

ok i started out with labs (great dogs to this day) but never got into any of the sports available to them. the only one that i like is agility. but could not get into it. also the lab temperment and mine did not mix. than i got into fostering and fell in with a gsd rescue. fell in love with the breed and than saw my first schh trail and it was all over. hooked ever since then.
the labs have come and gone but the gsd is here to say. my first one was a american showline female and she had to be rehomed, that sucked,
got a good working line male now and all is good

This is EXACTLY what happened to me! I grew up with Boxers and two Labs, then as an adult I had owned mostly smaller rescues, and been involved with working earth dogs. I had helped with some pet GSDs with behavior problems and found that I really liked working with them.... and then I discovered working GSDs!
So now I'm a newbie GSD fan, learning as fast as I can from a whole bunch of people on this forum and from Ed Frawley's articles and videos.
This is an interesting thread,Glenn .

Interesting thread Glen! I feel the same way and it reminded me to buy a power ball ticket
My first dog was a GSD mix and I just did basic pet obedience w/her. Then when I was 13 I got a Malamute who I used to do backpacking/hiking with. Anyway I got a purebred GSD (unknown lines) about 4 years ago and started getting interested in Schutzhund when I was obedience training her. I got my working line GSD puppy this year and have been training him for SchH. I like and admire many breeds of dogs as well but I really like the versatility of the GSD. My Malamute was a great dog and super smart, but sometimes I got tired of getting outsmarted when she was using her powers for evil (she was a very accomplished thief).

I've seen several pictures of dogs on this very forum who looked to me as though they might use their powers for evil! LOL! That bright-eyed, intelligent gleam in the eye..........
