Hey everyone, I have a problem with my dog eating. I feed him Nutro Natural and he loves the food,,,as long as I am in the kitchen with him. You see, he will eat with much gusto as long as I am with him. What I usually like to do is put his food down in the morning and then go and get ready for work. But, everytime I turn around he is right behind me. Same thing at night, he follows me EVERYWHERE. I like that a lot but I don't like always having to be in the kitchen while he eats. I only give him about 15 and than I take the food up. I am just worried he is not getting all of his nutrition unless I stay with him the whole time???? Any suggestions would be great.

If you do stay with him, how long does it take for him to eat what you give him?
A couple of thoughts here. This isn't the worst thing in the world. It sure is better than having a dog that will devour his food in literaly 10 seconds flat. My Golden Retriever eats so fast that I will mosten his dry food because it slows him down. He will literally choke.
I know that this wasn't the main point of your question. You want to know how to get him to eat without you being there. Well, the reason I asked you how long does it take him to eat what you give him is because if it takes him 5 minutes or less, and your that concerned about him eating then I would just make the time and stay in the room while he eats. If this is impossible, I would put him in a dog crate and leave the food in there with him.(For the 15 minutes you spoke of). Leave the room. If its just him, the crate, and the food, I would imagine he would eat considering he cannot now follow you around. Just a thought or two.

How old is your dog? I had the same problem with my pup.You have to decide if you want to leave the food down all day or pick it up like your doing. I left the food down because their was no aggression problem guarding the food. I tried picking it up like you do but that did't give her a better appetite the next feeding. If you go on the barf diet I don't think you will have any problem if you think this is a major problem. My pup took a 180 at about 10 months i can't give her enough kibble to staisfy her vivacious appetite. Of couse I do control how much I give her.

Depending upon it's age, it's probably not going to hurt your dog to miss a meal or two. My GSD would sometimes go 3 days without eating, not because I didn't try to feed him, but because he is so picky, he refused to eat anything I gave him. This went on for many many months, and he doesn't seem any worse off for it. I had consulted several vets, who all said leave the food down for 15 mins. If he doesn't eat, pick it up and he doesn't get to eat again until the next meal. Period. I still have problems with him eating occasionally, but he's learned that it's easier if he just eats his food

The last two posts also bring up a good point. The old saying, if he is hungry enough, he'll eat.

I agree with Chuck. I would crate the dog so he can't follow you. In 15 min come back if he hasn't eaten then that's he's tough luck. He'll learn quickly that putting the food down means eat now or go hungry

Yup, I have never seen a dog starve them self to death. So don't worry about it. 15-20 min and pick it up, If left down too long he may decide to guard the foood and that gets to be a pain.

thanks for the input guys. I really like the idea about giving him a limited time to eat. I guess I am just a push over when it comes to food because I love my food so much.. .....I will try to give him only 15 minutes and thats IT. He is just about 1 year right now to answer your question that is why I am concerned about his growing and all that. I am not prepared to start a barf diet so I will stick it out this way. I don't want anyone to think that I am 100% opposed to staying in the kitchen with him. I am concerned however about him depending on me for him to eat his meals. What if I have to go out of town and he can't go? Thanks again everyone, you guys are great!

Oh, by the way, if I stay with him, he can eat his whole meal in about 10 minutes.....

I had this same problem with my previous dog!
I've tried something different this time around. I got my current pup at 9 weeks and started out by feeding her and then standing right next to her while she eats. I gradually increased the distance between us until I could be in another room and now I can even leave the house. Consistency is the key! She is fed at 6:00 a.m. & 6:00 p.m., ALWAYS! If she doesn't eat within 10 minutes, she waits until next time (there were only about 2 next times).
She is 8 months old & eats all by herself in about 5 minutes.
