Hi everyone, anyone have any knowledge on what communicable diseases can be passed on from a person to a dog. Specifically in the case of a bite? You always hear about the person having to get checked out but what about the poor dog when they bite some needle fiend or something? Is there a procedure that police departments use after a dog makes a "live" bite? Thanks in advance for the input.
Umm, let me start by saying this; AIDS is not as easily transmitted as they would like you to think. It is not primarily transmitted through sex but they stil classify it as an STD because it does occour that way SOME times.
Secondly saliva is a natural protectant and even if it were possible for dogs to get HIV .. it would be highly unlikely for the dog to contract the virus that way. After all the dog is the one poking the holes here.
I did a breif search and came up with a page that deals with this subject on it for you. Maybe this will ease your mind some. AIDS vetinfo
Diseases that can be transmitted by dogs to humans are classified as "zoonotic". Lepto being one, rabies of course the most common. Todate, unless my information is incorrect, there has never been a case of "aids", transmitted from human to dog or vice versa during a law enforcement contact. Law Enforcement handlers (hopefully) are trained to be cautious, when apprehending a subject that has been bitten, and take the normal precautions when contact with bodily fluids is possible. Those precautions include ensuring that any possible body fluids are removed from the dog. Having researched literally thousands of dog bites by trained service dogs, there is just no evidence that HIV has been spread due to a dog bite.
