How much crate time is to long for a puppy alone?
I am out of the house from 8:00 until 6:00, about 10 hours 5 days a week - but I do have my mother living with me, she is 82 and very healthy. She would not be able to walk the dog, However, she could let the puppy/dog out in our fenced in yard for an hour a day or so. Once the puppy starts to get bigger 4-6 months, jumping on my mother might become a problem…
I do expect to spend a lot of quality time with my dog when I am not at work.
We usually do not suggest to leave a puppy in a crate more then 4 hours at a time, especially if you want to get housebreaking started. That is a long day, for her to just let the puppy out to stretch and potty a few times a day would be great.
if your main concern is that your dog jumps all the time you can correct that. I have a JRT and they are very very very hyper and love to jump, it took awhile for me to get it out of her but she doesn't jump anymore, unless you want her to.
I just ignored her everytime she would jump or i would make her sit and when she calms down thats when i pet her.
Everyone has their own opinions when it comes to crates, Some say its not good to leave them in for more then 3 hours some say 6 some say more.
As long as the pup is getting out to go to the bathroom during the 10 hours he should be fine. As he gets older he will be able to control it longer. Make sure the crate is the right size though and not too big where he can lay in one end and go to the bathroom in the other. He should not go to the bathroom in the crate if the breeder did their job and raised a clean litter.
My Justice was in his crate for about 9 hours a day during my 4 day work week when he was 8 weeks old and I had no issues. The first few days I had a friend let him out during the day to go but after that he was fine.
Good luck with the new pup.
