I have read Ed's article on using the prong as a training method to not chase or try and eat our cats. Well so far it has worked and the dog usually leaves the cat in peace.
My question is can we use this method on all other animal species as well?? We have ducks here and I used the same method and it worked really well.
I still wouldn't let him alone with any animal (he has very high prey drive) Well someone said its cruel to use this method to try and get your dog to leave everything alone (all pets) and that I am expecting to much from him??
There are a few other animals that I would not mind using prong training method with. (other free range bird species)All I am trying to get out of him is for him NOt to go after and kill one of the animals while im around. Anyways just let me know if my expectations for him are to high.
To make it a little more clear I just wanted to say he is bias towards diff species of animals for some wierd reason. He got a strong correction for going after the cat so he learned to leave the cat alone and the samething with the ducks. But there are other animals we have that he still doesnt respect and these animals are the ones that I didn't use the prong training method with.
Prey is anything that runs that doesn't bite back. The prong provides the bite. What other small animals do you have that require your protection?
A good recall outdoors will protect wildlife.
Make sure your dog has plenty of opportunity to indulge in his prey drive - frisbees, tennis balls, sticks, logs, tug toys, you can add training and tracking and agility. These are all prey drive if trained properly.
