Our 11 week old puppy does not like to go out of our yard for a walk nor does he want anything to do with going to the park. We live in a cul-de-sac and getting the dog out fo the yard is a feat but getting him out of the cul-de-sac makes him very afraid and he wants to run for home.
Is this normal for his age? Is there anything we can do to help him get more used to new places?
Thanks

Your puppy is throughing a fit because he doesn't want to do something and you are rewarding him by not making him do what you want. When he throws the fit, just stand there nice and calm and don't say a word. Wait until he stops fighting and then praise him. Lure him out with treats. Make the experience of going out as happy as you can with your voice and with treats, but never praise or treat when he is throwing a fit. If need be, pick him up and walk a few houses down and then repeat the same process. Take the dog everywhere you can. Read ED's articles on socialization and becoming the pack leader and do a search for socialization on the board. Remember that you control what your dog does, not the other way around. Ignore unwanted behaviors and praise what you like. Good luck.

I'm with Jake on this, you have to keep taking the pup out (obviously). Hopefully, he's still small, cause I just would (not making a big deal of it) calmly pick him up and take him to the far end of the yard. Then I'd put him down to poop/pee, I'd bring treats out and toys, and generally have a fun time to make him see the yard is a great place.
I would also be all over the picking him up, putting him in the car and going to fun fun fun places. Outdoor walks in the woods. Meeting other KNOWN friendly dogs. Going to other friendly people's homes. Visit to the vet to NOT get an exam.

Jenn, the problem is the pup doesn't want to leave the yard, not that the pup doesn't want to go out into the yard.
And at 11 weeks, he should not be exposed to places where other dogs have been, because he hasn't had all his shots yet.

Though I would not bring my 11 week old puppy out among dogs/puppies with questionable health, I definitely DO bring them out. Car rides, walks in the woods, to friends homes that are responsible about the health temperament of their pets.
I like to end up with adults dogs that are a part of my life and can go anywhere, do anything, and it's 'just another wacky day with Mom'. All 3 of the dogs I've raised from puppies are exactly that. Nothing fazes them, they are comfortable in pretty much any new situation, and I never have to leave them at home because I'm worried they'll be nervous wrecks or just more trouble than they are worth.

Peggy,
Is the puppy on leash? What do you do when the puppy acts like it doesn't want to go?
It's a fine line to dance....socializing the puppy thoroughly, while keeping it safe from yucky bugs. I agree that you should have the puppy out and about as much as possible, in safe areas. I disagree about walks in the woods though....wild animals carry lots of yucky stuff. Too much risk of disease for an unvaccinated puppy.

Yes, the puppy is on a leash. If I take him out of the yard, he runs and pulls as hard as he can to get into the back yard (where he goes to eliminate) and then up the back stairs of the house to go inside. Last night I had him in the front yard and my husband drove up in his truck with the windows down and the stereo playing. This really freaked him out. He ran and pulled me around the side of the house to the back yard and up the stairs. I did carry him back out afterwards and with treats coaxed him into playing in the yard and then coming to me a few step out into the culdesac. I think the treats and carry idea will work with him until he gets used to things. I am going to take him several places this weekend with lots of treats and be prepared to do some carrying.

I think you might have the wrong idea about carrying your dog. The point of carrying was just to get her past that point if you could not get her to calm down when she freaked out. You had hit a wall where the dog would not move and the carrying was a last resort. You should not carry the dog unless it is absolutely needed. Again she will learn that when she doesn't want to move, she will just be picked up and then the dog gets it's way. Just something to think about. The best thing is to take small steps and be very patient. It's hard but in the end it will pay off. Also, from what you said about the noises, you might want to think about the nerves of your dog and how strong it is. Good luck.

Peggy,
What do you say/do when he does this? And please, take this with the spirit with which it is intended.... How is an 11 wk old puppy able to pull you anywhere?
Is there a reputable dog-trainer anywhere nearby that will come to your house and offer advice? I am sure there are people here who can offer referrals.

Maybe it's a GOOD thing he doesn't want to leave your yard! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> Seriously, though, why force it on him right now? I don't take Jack out of the yard unless he's in the car, and so far he hasn't tried to leave the yard on his own - of course I'm always out there with him and if there's a person or dog walking down the road or something, I'll call him to me and hold onto him or take him inside so he isn't tempted... or have him on the Flexi. I haven't tried to teach him the boundary with the e-collar yet, and was kind of waiting until my trainer said it was okay to do so before I did.
