Does anyone know of a good vet to take OFA xrays in the northern Il area? I don't mind having to drive a few hours if the person is good. Heard a few horror stories of vets not getting the positioning right and needing to retake them.
He does excellent OFA xrays without anesthesia. I have used him several times and if he was closer to me, we would use him exclusively for hip and elbow radiographs..
I don't have his contact info on this computer, but you could probably Google and find it.
Jenni, Didn't know if you found the info for Dr. Link that you were looking for so I thought that I would post it. I used him for my dogs OFA and he did a great job, and they came back **Excellent**!
Hope this doesn't show up twice. I don't think it went through the first time...
Caleb has an appointment with Dr.Link mid December, 3 days after his 2nd bday. Just wish it wasn't 2 hours away! I appreciate your input, Brandon and Cindy. I feel much more confident that I'll get an accurate rating if I trust the vet's experience and skill. Some in my area say they only do a couple a year. Thanks again guys!
How does a Vet obtain excellent OFA radiographs without drugging your dog? I cannot imagine a dog being able to stay still long enough for correct positioning. I would also like to know if anyone could give me some ideas on how to convince my Vet to do the same, ie; no drugs.
Glenn,
unless your vet has done this before, he may not be able to get the proper positioning without anesthesia. It's all about knowing proper restraining techniques and correct positioning.
Dr. Link has been doing this for a very long time and his assistant is very good. I took my very dominant and strong willed Otis daughter to him for OFA radiographs and they literally were done (hips and elbows) in a few minutes. The let me go back in the xray room with the dog so I watched what they did. As someone who was a vet tech for 15 years and had taken lots of xrays myself, I was impressed.
from start to finish, including paperwork I was out of there in about 25 minutes, and my dog was no worse for the wear.
Some vets can't get correct positioning WITH the dog sedated, so I wouldn't suggest an inexperienced vet try this without proper training, and I wouldn't let him learn on my dog .
