I have done a search and I am hoping you can help me understand what the potential jumping ability is of my 5 1/2 month old male GSD. Currently the little guy still seems a little un-coordinated.
Brian,
You need to wait until the dog is at least a year and a half. You don’t want to put too much stress on growing joints. You can start to train a jump command but you would only want to have your boy jump something that is lower than his shoulders. Landing is what is hard on a young dog so you can also teach him to jump up onto a platform like a picnic table or park bench when he is around 9 months. Don't worry about you pup being a little clumsy you will start to see marked improvements over the next few months
I have large breed dogs and play agility with them. My rule is no repetitive jumping higher than pastern height until 9-10 months or so, and no jumps higher than the elbow until x-rays show growth plates have closed...18-24 months old.

Why are you asking? Trying to figure out a suitable kennel wall height? Or are you starting agility with him? Or are you just curious? My boy would jump up onto tables at that age, but not on command, I'd just walk outside one day n catch him on the outside table about to steal food off the table He's 18 months old now n he'll jump up into the truck bed or up onto a kids climbing frame platform.
