I am thinking about seeing if i could get an ear implant for one of my dogs as i have had a shepherd with ear infections before and it is not a nice thing for the dog at all, so i want to give the best chance of this not happening in one of mine that has a floppy ear.
I emailed one vet who referred to it as "cosmetic surgery" and stated that "it was not condoned in Aust" Just want to smack the narrow minded Bi%&h!
ANyway i have heard of a vet that does it whether allowed or not (he is a very well respected vet and breeder of GSD'S)but i am yet to contact him.
What i am interested in is what is involved in the surgery and any risks or complications that could come to pass. Also if anyone knows what the success rate is?
My dog's ear is cocked so it is not completly flat, would this help in the sucsess rate???
Anyones experiences would be of great interest and also any sites you can direct me to would be great, the more graphic the better so i know as much as possible.
It is not a really common procedure, because it is cosmetic, no matter what you say about your other dog with the constant infections.
There are plenty of flop eared dogs that do just fine, as log as the ears are cleaned and kept free of hair.
I have a dog with an implants, but it was done proir to me getting her, so I can't tell you much about it other than the fact that she CAN'T put her ears into the down or laid back position. Matter of fact, when she is attentive, her ears "cross" and she has been called the alien dog by more than one person.
Both ears do stand though.
so far as what you mean about cocked, I can't tell you, it really depends on how much the cartilidge is creased and the talent of the vet at this point.
Thanks for the reply, that is interesting about your dog not being able to put her ears down, That is the sort of pros & cons info i am after since i know so little about it.
I might try and tape her ears for a bit just in case i get VERY lucky.
Any more info would be great so that whatever choice i make it is informed - Horror stories welcome Those are the ones that stop you from becoming blazae about something like this.
Has anyone tryed putting a BreathRight Strip inside a floppy ear to hold it up? They're pretty stiff and you could double them up. The pup may scratch it out. Any thoughts on that? I haven't had floppy ear issues.
Not familiar with this product, is it something you would get at a chemist or would it be veterinary supplies?
If i can use something that is a little less annoying to try and jinx her ear up it would be good, i could also use it in muggy or wet weather to keep the ear a little more open and ventalated.
No Julie. Breathe Right strips are nasal strips that they use to help prevent snoring. This is something you would find at a pharmacy or grocery store.
Why would you want to put your dog through having an ear implant? This is nothing but cosmetic surgery, and unnecessary. As far as I'm concerned, the only reason for doing this would be because the OWNER didn't like the fact that their dog's ears didn't stand. I don't think it has any benefit for the dog. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who have GSDs whose ears don't stand fully, if at all, but aren't having ear implants. The only benefit I see is that the owner would be happier and more comfortable with their dog's appearance. So far as ear infections, I've owned numerous dogs with floppy ears and never had a problem, as long as the ears were kept clean.
This is silly, give me a break here... is it that important? Ear implants hahahha that's got to be the funniest way to rake in the bucks I have heard yet!
I think if your that worried about infection or function to get an ear implant, you would be worried enough to just keep his ear clean and away from infection...
Am I the only one who thinks this is just really stupid?
